On October 8, a Russian court ordered the arrest in absentia of the Italian RAI public broadcaster’s journalist Stefania Battistini and her cameraman Simone Traini. They crossed the border from Ukraine to report war news. Italian and foreign news organizations broadly spread the story since it has global relevance. Unfortunately, AI chatbots are more conservative than the world journalism community. Let’s see why.

The two Italians were not alone charged with the transgression. Indeed, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has opened criminal cases against 14 foreign journalists since August 17 for illegally crossing the border between Ukraine and Russia’s Kursk region. Yet, Battistini and Traini were the first to report on the Ukrainian military operation in Russian territory. Under Moscow’s law, illegal border crossing is punishable by up to five years in prison. However, the experienced reporter Battistini stated she followed the Geneva Conventions by documenting the event as a war correspondent.
