OpenAI reportedly planning its own social network - AI Business
OpenAI, a company best known as the creator of ChatGPT, may be preparing to enter the social media market. This could mean not only a new form of communication, but also direct competition for the applications of Meta and X. According to reports "The Verge", the prototype of the social platform is based on ChatGPT's recently developed image generation feature. It lets users create everything from infographics and logos to anime-style illustrations and Barbie dolls. In March, the popularity of these features was so great that it overwhelmed OpenAI’s infrastructure. Sam Altman, the company’s CEO, even changed his profile picture on X (formerly Twitter) to an AI-generated image.
Integration with ChatGPT
It is not yet known whether the new social platform will be integrated with the ChatGPT application or will it appear as a separate service. Both options have their merits. The former would leverage ChatGPT's existing user base, while the latter would create a space dedicated solely to AI-generated visual content. Altman himself also reportedly asked outside experts for their opinion on the project privately. This suggests ongoing conceptual work and user testing. While the project is still in its early stages, its potential launch could introduce a completely new dynamic to the world of social internet.

Response to Elon Musk's Activities
The potential OpenAI platform would be a response to the activities of Elon Musk, who is intensively developing own AI ecosystem under the xAI brand, tightly integrated with the X platform. Meta also uses data from Instagram and Facebook to train its models, such as Calls. Having its own social network would give OpenAI access to real-time data. This could be an invaluable resource for further training language and multimodal models.
Innovation in Design
Design can make a difference beyond the social media market itself. It would also be a way to showcase the capabilities of OpenAI tools, allowing users to explore the creative potential of generative models. It is also another step toward expanding beyond classic chatbots and APIs and toward full-fledged consumer platforms. It is worth emphasizing that OpenAI's plans appear in the context of the dispute between the company and Elon Musk. In February, the billionaire tried to acquire OpenAI for $97 billion, which was met with an unequivocal rejection. Musk has long criticized the commercialization of the company he co-founded. The proposal for a new social platform is certainly not going to ease those tensions. In fact, it could exacerbate them.
Potential and Future
The social media market is crowded today. Instagram with Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, X – all vying for users’ attention. Is there room for another platform? If so, it probably has to be something completely different. And that’s where OpenAI’s opportunity comes in. Instead of classic content, it can focus on the community around generative AI tools – illustrations, memes, avatars or personalized visual materials. For now, the project remains an experiment. It’s unclear whether the platform will ever see the light of day in a public version. But even the decision to develop a prototype shows that OpenAI is thinking about the future more broadly than just through the prism of language models.
