OpenAI signs MoU with IndiaAI Mission to launch OpenAI Academy in India

OpenAI has established a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government's IndiaAI Mission to introduce the OpenAI Academy in India. This collaboration aims to provide artificial intelligence (AI) training content via the OpenAI Academy and the IndiaAI FutureSkills portal. The partnership will also offer public sector training programs in English, Hindi, and four regional languages, marking the platform's inaugural international expansion.

According to Jason Kwon, the chief strategy officer at OpenAI, India stands out as one of the leading countries actively engaged in developing AI technologies. With the second-largest number of ChatGPT users, India demonstrates a strong interest in AI innovation and growth.

Addressing Challenges in AI Development

During the event, Abhishek Singh, Chief Executive Officer of the IndiaAI Mission, acknowledged a significant challenge hindering AI advancement in India—the lack of access to computing power. Singh highlighted the measures taken to address this issue, such as providing around 34,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) at affordable rates, which are significantly lower than global prices.

Promoting Access to Datasets and Tools

Speaking about datasets, Singh emphasized the offerings of the AI Kosh platform, which provides comprehensive datasets across various domains, along with tools, models, and a sandbox environment to facilitate experimentation and innovation in building AI solutions.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology, expressed the significance of the partnership in advancing the shared goal of democratizing access to knowledge and technology. This collaboration signifies a crucial step towards empowering individuals with enhanced access to information and technological resources.

OpenAI's global tour, led by Jason Kwon, engaging with policymakers on AI regulation and deployment, paved the way for this groundbreaking partnership. Supporting Nonprofit Organizations in India

OpenAI's extension of the global AI for Impact Accelerator Program to India through the OpenAI Academy initiative includes technical grants for nonprofit organizations. Collaborating with philanthropic partners, such as The Agency Fund, Tech4Dev, and Turn.io, this program equips nonprofits with API credits, technical assistance, and access to OpenAI tools to implement AI-driven solutions for social impact.
