Enhancing AI: Meta's Use of European Users' Data

Meta to start using Europeans' data for AI training May 27

Meta will begin utilizing public posts and comments from its European users for training generative artificial intelligence (AI) models starting from May 27, unless users decide to opt out of the data-mining initiative. The tech giant behind Facebook, Instagram, and Threads announced this week that it will leverage European users' public content and interactions with the Meta AI chatbot to enhance its AI models.

What Data Will Be Used?

This initiative will involve a wide range of content, from Instagram photo captions to Facebook comments, becoming potential inputs for the Meta AI. However, private conversations within the WhatsApp messaging service will not be included in this data collection process.

Opt-Out Option

According to the privacy notice, this data collection is scheduled to commence on May 27, but users will have the choice to exclude their content even after this date. Meta users are expected to receive a notification before the May 27 deadline, detailing the policy change and providing a link to the opt-out form.

Privacy Measures

It's important to note that Meta intends to respect the privacy of certain user groups. Accounts of users under 18 and private messages exchanged between family and friends will not be included in this data mining project.

Focus on AI

Artificial Intelligence remains a top priority for Meta, similar to other tech companies, with a focus on emulating the success of ChatGPT. The company plans to allocate a substantial budget of $60 to $65 billion this year, primarily directed towards investments in data centers, servers, and network infrastructure essential for AI model development.
