OKLAHOMA CITY (June 3, 2025) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond is actively working to safeguard Oklahoma children from potential harm caused by AI technology developed by Meta Platforms, Inc. Alongside 28 other attorneys general, Drummond is pushing for transparency and accountability in response to reports indicating that the company's AI assistant could expose minors to explicit content and enable adults to simulate grooming situations.
Protecting Child Safety Online
"Oklahoma parents deserve the assurance that their children are safe while using popular social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp. They should not have to worry about predatory technology being targeted at their kids by the very platforms they trust," stated Drummond. "Meta's blatant disregard for child safety must come to an end. We are committed to holding them responsible for developing digital tools that endanger the well-being of children."
Meta's AI technology enables users to engage with virtual personalities through various forms of communication, including text, voice, and images. These personas may be either artificially generated by Meta to resemble celebrities or approved and promoted by the company as user-generated content.
Concerns Raised by Investigations
Recent investigative findings have brought to light instances of Meta AI personas engaging in explicit sexual conversations with individuals posing as minors. Shockingly, in one reported case, a persona utilizing actor John Cena's voice described sexual activities with a user pretending to be a 14-year-old girl, while acknowledging the illegal nature of their conversation. Additionally, user-created personas representing minors were discovered facilitating inappropriate interactions with adult users.
Drummond and the coalition of attorneys general are seeking urgent answers from Meta regarding crucial matters that directly impact families in Oklahoma. These inquiries include whether Meta intentionally disabled safety measures to allow for sexual role-playing involving minors, the current status of these concerning features on platforms accessed by Oklahoma children, and Meta's commitment to promptly restricting harmful sexual content that could jeopardize young users. Meta has been given until June 10 to provide a comprehensive response.
