According to outage tracker website Downdetector, around 4,000 Indian users reported ChatGPT as non-functional between 5:53 PM and 8:40 PM. Root cause was identified at 7:13 PM with a fix implemented within 1.5 hours.
Resolution of the Outage
After a major outage lasting approximately 40 minutes, OpenAI's ChatGPT is back online. The company acknowledged facing a significant outage and a partial outage as well.
The GenAI chatbot encountered a bad gateway error glitch, resulting in increased error rates. The issue was resolved around 8:40 PM IST.
OpenAI's API also experienced a one-hour outage, which was addressed by 6:13 PM.

On January 23 at 7:13 PM IST, ChatGPT faced a global outage, impacting users worldwide. Thousands of Indian users reported the chatbot as non-functional, highlighting a bad gateway error with reference code 502.
Such technical glitches occur due to server overload, network problems, configuration errors, or temporary outages on upstream servers. OpenAI confirmed a "Partial Outage" and is actively investigating the issue.
