A recent poll conducted by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism has revealed a growing trend of people turning to AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, for their daily news updates. While only 7% of individuals currently use AI for news consumption, the numbers are higher among the younger demographic, with 12% of under-35s and 15% of under-25s utilizing chatbots for news.
AI Chatbots for News Updates
The most popular chatbot, OpenAI's ChatGPT, is widely used, followed by Google's Gemini and Meta's Llama. Users appreciate the personalized and relevant news provided by these chatbots, with many also using AI for tasks like summarizing articles, translating content, recommending stories, and even asking questions about current events.
However, there is still a level of distrust among users regarding AI's impact on the transparency, accuracy, and trustworthiness of news. Despite the advancements in AI technology, there are concerns about the generation of false information or "hallucinations" by these large language models.
Traditional Media vs. Social Networks
The Reuters Institute report indicates a shift from traditional media sources to social networks and video-sharing platforms for news consumption. Platforms like TikTok have become the primary source of news for nearly half of 18–24-year-olds, especially in emerging countries like India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Thailand. Even platforms like X, owned by Elon Musk, have seen an increase in usage for news.
Three out of four Malaysians believe that AI has significantly impacted their daily lives in the past few years. The Ipsos AI Monitor 2025 reveals a positive outlook on AI's ability to enhance job quality and drive economic growth. Despite the optimism, there is also a concern about AI potentially replacing current jobs in the near future.
AI Integration in the Workplace
Malaysia aims to strike a balance between embracing AI innovation and safeguarding public trust and workforce resilience. The government is taking steps to capitalize on AI as an economic growth catalyst while ensuring responsible AI development and usage. Malaysians are supportive of regulating AI usage and trust the government to oversee responsible AI deployment.
OpenAI's Productivity Tools
OpenAI is reportedly developing a productivity suite integrated into ChatGPT, allowing users to edit documents, communicate via chat, and manage tasks. Users can already utilize features like Canvas to edit documents and code within ChatGPT. The potential launch of a complete office and collaborative tools suite is expected by the end of the year or early 2026.
Reports suggest that OpenAI is expanding its AI capabilities beyond chatbots to include real-time collaboration on exportable documents, further solidifying its position as a competitor to established software suites like Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
As AI continues to evolve and integrate into various aspects of our lives, the landscape of media consumption and workplace productivity is poised for significant transformation.
