Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is leveraging generative artificial intelligence (AI) for practical applications, focusing on cybersecurity with its new product, Google Threat Intelligence.
What Happened
According to The Verge, Google is integrating its Mandiant cybersecurity unit and VirusTotal with the Gemini AI model. The Gemini 1.5 Pro large language model enables rapid reverse engineering of malware, such as the WannaCry virus, identifying vulnerabilities like a kill switch in just 34 seconds. Additionally, Gemini assists in summarizing threat reports into natural language, aiding companies in assessing potential impacts and prioritizing responses.
Threat Intelligence offers a network for preemptively monitoring threats. It incorporates Mandiant's expertise in threat detection and VirusTotal's threat indicators contributed by the community. Google's acquisition of Mandiant extends to assessing security vulnerabilities in AI projects through the Secure AI Framework. This collaboration aims to safeguard AI models from threats like data poisoning, ensuring their integrity and resilience against malicious manipulation.
"While there is no shortage of threat intelligence available, the challenge for most is to contextualize and operationalize intelligence relevant to their specific organization," said Dave Gruber, principal analyst from Enterprise Strategy Group in a blog post. "Unarguably, Google provides two of the most important pillars of threat intelligence in the industry today with VirusTotal and Mandiant. Integrating both into a single offering, enhanced with AI and Google threat insights, offers security teams a new means to operationalize actionable threat intelligence to better protect their organizations."
The effectiveness of these AI-driven cybersecurity solutions remains to be fully realized. In the meantime, they mark a significant departure from AI's conventional applications and demonstrate potential beyond superficial tasks.
