OpenAI Explores Developing Its Own Browser to Challenge Google
Open AI backed ChatGPT, is reportedly developing a web browser to integrate with the chatbot program. The project is still in the developmental phase and the company focuses on improving the usability and availability of ChatGPT, one of the leading AIs internationally.
Alongside this potential development, OpenAI is working with companies such as Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline to offer search-related products. Thus, it is associated with attempts to enter the search and browser segments and compete with Google.
Current Developments
Although SearchGPT was recently launched in a limited version, its large-scale application is expected to be officially introduced next year. Yet, sources claim the browser development is still in the planning stage, and no release is likely soon.
Competition with Google
The emerging focus of OpenAI on the search and browser segments sits well with mounting pressures on Google. The Justice Department in the United States of America has also recommended that Google divest its Chrome browser to reduce monopoly in its search business. Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, experienced a significant 5% drop in share value following the recommendation.
Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, Google has intensified its efforts to retain its market share. In response, the company released its generative AI chatbot, Gemini, to compete in the fast-evolving AI landscape.
Partnerships with Major Technology Companies
The introduction of SearchGPT and multiple OpenAI discussions with the key partners are the preliminary steps towards solidifying its presence in the search and browsing market. If successful, this move could result in the emergence of a strongly probable competitor to Google, changing the market balance.
OpenAI is also increasing its partnerships with major technology companies. Discussions with Samsung have revealed partnerships to support AI capabilities in its products to harness the common use of modern AI technologies. This partnership could threaten Google because Samsung remains an important business partner for the search engine.
OpenAI is now working with Apple, and the technology supports the iPhone maker’s ‘Apple Intelligence’ capabilities. The partnership aims to enhance OpenAI's establishment of AI-enabling solutions in consumer devices, despite strong competition in the ecosystem.
