Google Gemini temporarily halts AI-generated images of humans
Google faced a challenge this week involving its Gemini chatbot, leading to the temporary suspension of the chatbot's capability to create images of human beings. This decision was made following numerous complaints from Gemini users who were dissatisfied with the images generated by the AI chatbot. The users were particularly unhappy with the inaccurate depictions of historical figures, such as Nazi soldiers and the U.S. Founding Fathers, by Google Gemini.
Addressing the Issue
Several individuals expressed their displeasure on social media after images of World War II-era Nazi soldiers with black skin or a diverse group of U.S. Founding Fathers with historically inaccurate skin tones surfaced. Subsequently, Google released an apology through the Google Communications account on X, acknowledging the problem and committing to enhancing the quality of generated images.
Temporary Pause
Despite efforts to address the issue promptly, Google encountered challenges in resolving the situation. As a result, Google decided to temporarily suspend Gemini's ability to produce images of humans. In a subsequent post on X, the Google Comms team reassured users that engineers are actively working on improvements and that an updated version will be released soon.
