Apple intensifies talks with OpenAI for iPhone generative AI features

Apple Inc. has renewed discussions with OpenAI about using the startup’s technology to power new features coming to the iPhone. The two companies are in talks about integrating OpenAI features into Apple’s iOS 18, which is the next iPhone operating system.

This move signifies a reopening of dialogue between Apple and OpenAI. Earlier this year, Apple had discussions with OpenAI, but minimal progress was made. Apple is also exploring discussions with Google regarding licensing Google’s Gemini chatbot.

While Apple has not finalized its partnerships, there is a possibility of collaborating with both OpenAI and Google, or potentially selecting another provider. Representatives from Apple, OpenAI, and Google have chosen not to comment on the matter.

The upcoming iPhone operating system will introduce new features based on Apple’s proprietary large language model. Additionally, Apple is looking to incorporate a chatbot-like feature similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Discussions have also included AI startup Anthropic.

Apple’s efforts in integrating advanced AI features into the iPhone reflect the company's commitment to innovation and user experience.
