Meta Reignites Plans To Train AI Using UK Users' Public Facebook ...
Meta is resuming its effort to train its AI systems using public posts from its U.K. users, incorporating regulatory feedback into a revised “opt-out” approach to enhance transparency. The company plans to begin using this data in the coming months, with in-app notifications explaining the process to users.
This move follows a pause due to regulatory concerns raised by the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and other data protection authorities in Europe. Meta’s approach, which has faced criticism for its opt-out mechanism and reliance on the GDPR’s “legitimate interest” basis, aims to reflect British cultural nuances in its generative AI models.
While Meta has faced similar challenges in the EU, where privacy laws are stricter, it has chosen to restart its efforts in the U.K. due to less stringent regulatory enforcement.
