Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio behind classics like “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle,” has chosen not to engage in the ongoing debate surrounding AI-generated artwork that closely resembles its distinctive style.
When approached by The Korea Herald recently and questioned about their position on the matter, including the possibility of taking legal measures against ChatGPT's AI-generated creations, a Studio Ghibli spokesperson conveyed, “We are refraining from issuing any statements. This decision stands for both Japan and the global community.”
The emergence of AI-generated illustrations in the style of Ghibli has been met with significant enthusiasm in South Korea and various parts of the world. Users of ChatGPT have observed a restriction by Open AI on the model's use for such purposes, particularly for free users.
Concerns in South Korea
According to data from industry tracker IGAWorks, ChatGPT saw a notable surge in daily active users in South Korea, increasing from 799,571 on March 1 to 1,252,925 users on March 27, following the introduction of its new image generation feature.
While Studio Ghibli has maintained a neutral stance on the matter, apprehensions are mounting within South Korea’s creative community. 
Lee Bin, the creator of the well-received Korean animated series "Hello Jadoo," expressed her unease on social media, stating that AI-generated images were challenging to digest.
