Unveiling the Impact of AI on Gen Z Job Applications

Gen Z and AI in the Job Application Process

Generation Z, born between 1996 and 2012, are known for being digital natives who have readily embraced artificial intelligence (AI) in various aspects of their lives. From academic research to vacation planning, AI tools like ChatGPT have become a common resource for this generation. However, according to Shoshana Davis, a Gen Z career consultant, the overreliance on AI for tasks such as generating cover letters and job application responses has led to some challenges.

Overreliance on AI Tools

Davis highlighted that businesses are increasingly receiving identical cover letters and job application answers, raising concerns that ChatGPT is being used inappropriately. A survey by Canva revealed that 45% of job seekers have utilized AI for resume-related tasks, indicating a growing trend in the job market.

AI Usage in Job Market

Among all generations, Gen Z seems to be the most dependent on AI, as indicated by a survey conducted by Grammarly. The survey found that 61% of Gen Z individuals rely on generative AI for their work tasks, showcasing a significant reliance on technology.

Challenges of AI Reliance

While embracing technology is essential, Davis cautioned against blindly copying AI-generated responses, as this practice can negatively impact job prospects. A study by Resume Genius showed that over half of hiring managers are skeptical of AI-generated resumes, viewing them as a potential red flag during candidate evaluation.

One of the key drawbacks of relying solely on ChatGPT for answers is its limited knowledge base. Initially constrained to pre-2021 data, ChatGPT's capabilities were enhanced in September 2023 to provide more up-to-date information, as announced by its owner, OpenAI.

Educating Gen Z on AI Usage

Davis shared a cautionary tale of an employer who received numerous identical responses from candidates, emphasizing the importance of educating young individuals on proper AI usage. She recommended using AI tools as aids rather than replacements in the job search process.

Data Strategy in AI

AI can be a valuable resource in various job application aspects, such as interview preparation and company research. However, it should complement human input rather than overshadow it, as noted by industry experts like Michelle Reisdorf.

Ultimately, the goal is to leverage AI tools effectively while maintaining a personal touch in job applications. By striking a balance between technology and human input, Gen Z individuals can enhance their job search strategies and stand out in a competitive market.
