For my first-ever LinkedIn post, I thought I’d share a sneak peek of the Shoreline Amphitheatre stage, as we put some finishing touches on our keynote for Google I/O tomorrow. Can’t wait to see those seats filled with developers from around the world who are building the next generation of AI experiences.

Excited to join Demis Hassabis, Elizabeth Reid, Sissie H., James Manyika and others on stage. We'll share how our Gemini models are bringing breakthrough AI capabilities to people through our products, as well as innovation across safety, research, infrastructure…we’re going to talk about it all. Tune in if you can — 10 a.m. PT tomorrow! https://io.google

Today, in collaboration with Harvard University, my colleagues in Google Research published in Science the largest synaptic-resolution 3D and computationally-intensive reconstruction of the human brain, showing each cell and its synaptic connections in a small part of the cortex — progress that may change our understanding of how our brains work. We present and point to a publicly available dataset, 1.4 petabytes in size, which includes over 49,000 neurons and 150 million synapses; this has already revealed never-before-seen structures within the human brain.

One detail that helps bring to life how impressive this is – and how much further we have to go – is that the part of the brain the team reconstructed is only about half the size of a grain of rice. But a mapping of even this small piece of the human cortex lets us start to explore so many unanswered questions in neuroscience, as well as in AI, with much more to come.

This in part has been made possible by developing AI/ML algorithms and tools that process and visualize data at unprecedented scale.

Incredible progress by Demis Hassabis and my colleagues at Google DeepMind -- Alphafold 3, predicting the structure and interactions not only of proteins, but also DNA, RNA, ligands and many more of life’s molecules.

We hope this technology will accelerate scientific breakthroughs, building on the impressive progress already made with AlphaFold, and contribute to life-changing treatments and a deeper understanding of biology.

As with each AlphaFold release, we’ve worked with the research and safety community on a science-led approach and conducted extensive assessments to mitigate potential risks and share its widespread benefits.

The potential for AI to advance science is just getting started.

The Alphafold 3 paper was also just published in Nature https://lnkd.in/gyXDw8kC

Today, we’re excited to announce #AlphaFold 3: our AI model for predicting the structures and interactions of all life’s molecules. 🧬

Here’s what you need to know:

  • By accurately modeling the shapes of proteins, DNA, RNA, and more, this next generation model could help scientists unlock new discoveries in biology.
  • We have also launched AlphaFold Server, a free platform that scientists around the world can use for non-commercial research. They can harness AlphaFold 3’s predictions and test hypotheses with just a few clicks - no matter their technical expertise.
  • Isomorphic Labs is applying this next generation model to design new drugs and tackle real-world therapeutic challenges
  • Millions of researchers around the world have used AlphaFold predictions in areas like developing an experimental malaria vaccine, designing plastic-eating enzymes and more.
