OpenAI, Google, Roblox and more join forces to form new organization
Feb. 11 - Engadget reported today that Roblox, Discord, Open AI, and Google have jointly launched a program called ROOST. This is a non-profit organization that aims to build a scalable and interconnected security infrastructure for the AI era, known as Powerful Open Online Security Tools.
The organization, through ROOST, plans to provide public and private free open-source security tools to enhance security on various platforms. Initially, the focus will be on child safety. ROOST specifically mentioned that it will offer tools for detecting, auditing, and reporting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Partner companies will not only provide financial support but also contribute technical skills to develop these tools.
ROOST's philosophy emphasizes the urgency for a reliable and accessible security infrastructure due to the rapid development of generative AI. Instead of expecting small companies or organizations to develop security tools from scratch, ROOST aims to offer off-the-shelf solutions at no cost to them.
According to 1AI, the issue of children's online safety has gained attention in Congress, especially in discussions about the Children and Youth Online Privacy Protection Act and the Children's Online Safety Act. Companies like Google and OpenAI have committed to stop using AI technology to generate child sexual abuse material.
For Roblox, ensuring child safety is crucial. In 2020, data revealed that two-thirds of U.S. children aged nine to twelve use Roblox, making it essential to address child safety concerns. In 2024, Bloomberg Businessweek reported on the company facing challenges related to child safety, including a "pedophilia problem." This led the company to implement stricter rules and policies on private messaging for children.
While ROOST may not solve all issues, it will offer valuable support to organizations like Roblox. The initiative aims to provide an easier response for companies facing similar challenges.
