Modder uses ChatGPT to bypass security and install Windows 10 on a locked tablet

A modder known as "devicemodder" successfully resurrected a seven-year-old Android tablet that was headed for e-waste by leveraging ChatGPT and tweaking the BIOS. The tablet in question, a Panasonic Toughpad FZ-A2, was locked with Factory Reset Protection (FRP), a security feature that prevents unauthorized use following a factory reset. Devicemodder, with the help of ChatGPT, managed to install Windows 10 and Linux Mint on the tablet, bypassing the security restrictions.

The Hack Process

Devicemodder, a savvy hardware enthusiast from the XDA forums, utilized the tablet's Intel Atom X5 8550 processor and x86 UEFI BIOS to perform the hack. Initially, they installed Linux Mint on the device, overcoming hurdles like disabling secure boot, a process involving editing the BIOS to remove the block imposed by Panasonic's secure boot keys.

Encountering a SecureBoot violation error when booting from a flash drive, devicemodder sought assistance from ChatGPT. With the help of a CH341A flash programmer, they dumped the tablet's BIOS, sent it to ChatGPT to disable SecureBoot, and then re-flashed the modified BIOS back onto the device. This allowed them to successfully install Linux Mint on the tablet.

Windows 10 Installation

Following the Linux Mint success, devicemodder later managed to install Windows 10 on the same tablet. Despite encountering issues with touchscreen functionality and drivers, the modder achieved a functional Windows 10 installation on a device designed for Android 6.0, showcasing the unconventional use of ChatGPT in device modification.
