The Rise of AI in Video Games: ChatGPT Mod for Skyrim

ChatGPT AI Elder Scrolls Skyrim Mod Is A Robotic Horror Movie

Video games are not being left behind as modern AI technology continues to evolve. Big players in the gaming industry like Ubisoft and Square Enix have begun exploring the use of AI in video games, with testbeds already in place. One exciting use of AI in video games is a ChatGPT mod for Skyrim.

Art from the Machine, a user, recently shared a video showing a Skyrim mod that allows players to have conversations with non-playing characters (NPCs) via ChatGPT, xVASynth (text-to-speech), and Whisper (speech-to-text). This update introduces Skyrim scripting, which allows for lip syncing of voices and NPC awareness of in-game events.

However, it is not all sunshine and rainbows. The video shows that the mod is a robotic horror movie, with terrible synthesised voice acting, generic and bland writing, and the need to speed up the video to mask the amount of time it takes the game to respond to questions. To make matters worse, even the NPCs in the stores give opening hours like they were taking a phone call in a mall.

Despite the obvious shortcomings of the mod, it still has a following among those still playing Skyrim. If you are content with the word soup dialogue written by a machine that was trained on stuff that was already pretty generic in the first place, then the mod may be for you. However, it is important to remember that AI should not replace human art as the only true human experience.

The future of video games should be a balanced combination of human art and AI technology.
