Anthropic proposes protocol to standardize AI-data integration
Anthropic has open-sourced its ‘model context protocol’ (MCP), which connects AI assistants directly to data sources. This protocol aims to replace the current structure where companies need to create separate integration points for various data sets within an AI system and instead introduce a universal protocol. According to Anthropic, even the most sophisticated models are constrained by their isolation from data, trapped behind information silos and legacy systems. Every new data source requires its own custom implementation, making truly connected systems difficult to scale.
Companies can adopt MCP through two methods. Anthropic highlighted that the US-based financial services company Block Inc. has already integrated MCP into its systems. Similarly, development tool companies like Zed, Replit, Codium, and Sourcegraph are collaborating with Anthropic to do the same. Anthropic believes that as the ecosystem matures, AI systems will be able to maintain context as they move between different tools and datasets, replacing fragmented integrations with a more sustainable architecture.
OpenAI's Approach
Just like Anthropic, OpenAI is also exploring ways to integrate data sources into its models more seamlessly. In November, the company introduced a feature called “Work with Apps” for MacOS users. This feature enables ChatGPT to read content from platforms like VS Code, Xcode, Terminal, and iTerm2 to generate more accurate responses. By integrating developer tools into ChatGPT, developers can seek questions and suggestions about their code from the AI system.
OpenAI mentioned that ChatGPT retains this content as part of the user’s chat history, using it as training data. Users have the option to prevent ChatGPT from accessing their coding data by utilizing data controls or engaging in temporary chat sessions.
Both Anthropic and OpenAI are at the forefront of enhancing AI-data integration to drive innovation and efficiency in AI systems.
