TCS Confirms Plan To Build Its Own ChatGPT Like AI Tool

India's largest IT firm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has confirmed that it is building its own ChatGPT-like AI tool for enterprise code generation. The project is still at an early stage, but TCS is looking to use its vast internal code, data, and resources to build the solution through in-house algorithms. These algorithms will use large language modelling functions similar to generative AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT but for enterprise code generation.

According to TCS' Chief Operating Officer, N Ganapathy Subramaniam, the generative AI technology uses past code, data, and experience to learn and can generate code that the algorithm has been taught using TCS proprietary data. This technology will be used to accelerate client projects and will not depend only on multiple large language tools from different providers. TCS sees a huge opportunity in creating new roles for "prompt engineers" within the organization who can effectively communicate contextual queries to large language models for enterprise requirements.

Subramaniam believes that the enterprise usage of these generative AI solutions still requires finetuning in terms of ownership and IP of the end products. Hence, enterprise solutions will see more demand when regulations governing these solutions mature further to realize the full potential of the technology. He expects TCS to roll out some of these solutions before the end of his tenure, which will complete by May 2024.

TCS sees an opportunity to integrate its generative AI offering with its low-code software development platform MasterCraft, which is similar to Copilot. Copilot is a solution to auto-generate code launched by Microsoft-owned GitHub and OpenAI in October 2021 to help write software programs faster. Over 100 clients are using the Mastercraft tool currently, but TCS is yet to put ChatGPT-like solutions for data pattern intelligence into it. However, when implemented, TCS' vision for MasterCraft to be an intelligent low-code platform will come true.

In conclusion, TCS is firmly entering into the AI world with its own ChatGPT-like AI tool for enterprise code generation. The company is confident that this tool will provide secure and contextual generative AI solutions to accelerate client projects, which will contribute to the growth of the company and the AI space in the country.
