Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, provides an AI coding tool that competes with Anysphere's rapidly expanding coding model Cursor.
OpenAI's Bold Acquisition Move
If the deal is finalized, it will mark OpenAI's most significant acquisition so far, following the closure of a $40 billion funding round by the ChatGPT developer. Windsurf, a popular AI Integrated Development Environment (IDE), is currently in negotiations for its acquisition by OpenAI at a price of $3 billion.
While Windsurf is reportedly generating approximately $40 million in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), its competitor Cursor boasts a higher ARR of about $200 million and holds a valuation of around $10 billion.

The coding AI agents and copilots sector has been witnessing substantial growth, with total equity funding amounting to nearly $1.9 billion across 33 deals in the last year alone. Despite Windsurf's attractiveness as an acquisition target, questions arise regarding Anysphere (Cursor) potentially pricing themselves out of contention for acquisition following a significant funding round.
