Former OpenAI chief scientist launches own AI company
The former chief scientist and co-founder of OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever, has announced the launch of his own artificial intelligence (AI) company, Safe Superintelligence. This new venture will focus primarily on building safe AI technologies.
In a statement on Safe Superintelligence's website, the company emphasized its commitment to safety, stating that it is the mission, name, and entire product roadmap of the company. The firm aims to address safety and capabilities simultaneously, considering them as technical challenges to be addressed, with a focus on advancing capabilities rapidly while ensuring safety always takes precedence.
Safe Superintelligence's launch comes amid concerns raised by critics regarding major tech and AI companies prioritizing commercial benefits over safety principles. This issue was highlighted by former OpenAI staff members who departed the company in recent months. Co-founder of OpenAI, Elon Musk, has also criticized the company for shifting its focus towards commercial interests.
In response to these concerns, Safe Superintelligence stated that its singular focus on safety eliminates distractions from management overhead and short-term commercial pressures. The company's business model is designed to prioritize safety, security, and progress without being influenced by immediate commercial gains.
Key Team Members
Ilya Sutskever is joined at Safe Superintelligence by former OpenAI researcher Daniel Levy and former Apple AI lead Daniel Gross, both of whom are co-founders of the new company. Safe Superintelligence operates from offices in California and Tel Aviv, Israel.
The team at Safe Superintelligence believes that they are pioneering the world's first straight-shot SSI (safe superintelligence) lab, with a sole focus on developing a safe superintelligence. They view this as the most critical technical problem of our time.
