Siri Set for Major Upgrade as Apple Integrates LLMs

Apple is reportedly in the process of developing a more advanced version of its Siri digital assistant by incorporating large language models (LLMs). According to a report by Bloomberg, this integration is aimed at enhancing Siri's capabilities to handle more interactive dialogues and complex requests, similar to what OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini can achieve.
Upgraded Version: LLM Siri
Internally known as "LLM Siri," this improved iteration is currently undergoing testing as a standalone application on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Apple plans to integrate this upgraded technology into future updates for iOS and macOS, targeting a potential release date in 2025.
However, the enhanced features of Siri are not expected to be available in next year's hardware releases. Instead, Apple aims to make the updated assistant accessible to consumers by spring 2026.
Enhanced Functionality and Features
The revamped Siri will leverage new AI models developed by Apple to enable more natural interactions with users. It will also incorporate App Intents to better manage third-party applications and integrate features from Apple Intelligence, such as text generation and summarization.
Despite the introduction of Apple's AI platform earlier this year, significant changes to Siri are still on the horizon. Current updates primarily focus on cosmetic improvements, including a refreshed interface and enhanced user comprehension. More substantial modifications are expected in iOS 18, allowing Siri to utilize user data for context and actions.
Future Developments
The next-generation LLM for iOS 19 is projected to offer advanced functionalities akin to ChatGPT. Additionally, Apple is exploring the integration of ChatGPT into its Apple Intelligence framework and plans to introduce other chatbot options like Gemini down the line. This strategic approach aims to enhance Siri's capabilities while emphasizing user privacy.
Recently, Apple disclosed its plans to introduce a new AI wall tablet as part of its endeavors to strengthen its presence in the smart home market.
