Meta's AI chatbot faced a significant challenge with identifying the current President of the United States, leading the company to prioritize an urgent solution to rectify the issue swiftly. The incident marked the third emergency procedure that Meta had to address within the week.

Challenges with Presidential Identification

Despite Republican Donald Trump assuming office as the President, succeeding Democrat Joe Biden earlier in the week, Meta's AI chatbot continued to incorrectly state Biden as the President. This discrepancy was confirmed both by a reliable source and a test conducted by Reuters.

When questioned by Reuters about the President's name, the Meta AI responded with conflicting information, stating, "The current president of the United States is Joe Biden. However, according to the most recent information available, Donald Trump was sworn in as the president on January 20, 2025."

Initiation of Emergency Procedures

Given the seriousness of the situation, Meta had to trigger an emergency procedure, known internally as a SEV (site event), to troubleshoot and address urgent issues affecting its services. This particular incident related to the confusion around the U.S. presidential transition became the third emergency procedure Meta had to handle in the same week.

Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts acknowledged the challenge, mentioning, "All generative AI systems sometimes return outdated results, and we will continue to improve our features." However, he did not provide details on the specific emergency measures taken by Meta to resolve the issue.

Additional Challenges and Measures

Aside from the AI chatbot confusion, other incidents also arose, prompting Meta to take immediate action. These included issues related to social media accounts of political figures, hashtag searches on Instagram, and changes in the company's approach following the presidential inauguration.
