Meta Launches Lawsuit Against 'Nudify' AI Company Over Facebook Ads
Meta Platforms on Thursday announced a lawsuit against a Hong Kong-based company that has been able to bypass the social media giant's ad detection technology to promote AI-powered explicit apps.
The Lawsuit Details
The company being sued is Joy Timeline HK Limited, the owner of CrushAI apps. One of these apps enables users to use AI technology to create sexually explicit images from regular pictures. The lawsuit was filed in Hong Kong, where Joy Timeline is headquartered.
Despite having previous ads for their service removed from Meta's platforms, the company behind the 'nudify' app found ways to evade Meta's ad review process.
Meta's Response
Meta stated that they are enhancing their detection technology to identify more ads that may not overtly feature explicit content but are still in violation of Meta's guidelines.

This legal action follows a letter from Illinois Senator Dick Durbin earlier this year, inquiring about Meta's measures to prevent such ads. A report from tech news outlet 404 Media revealed that the majority of traffic to CrushAI's apps originated from ads on Meta's platforms.
Joy Timeline has yet to respond to the lawsuit.
Similar Lawsuits in the Industry
This lawsuit is the second of its kind in recent days. Disney and Universal collaborated to sue AI image generation company Midjourney for allegedly infringing on copyrights of properties like "Star Wars" and Marvel Comics, generating substantial revenue in the process.
