OpenAI Hires Public Policy In-Charge as First Indian Employee
Artificial Intelligence (AI) pioneer OpenAI has made a significant move by hiring its first employee in India. This strategic decision is aimed at shaping favorable regulations in the country. The news was reported by Bloomberg on April 19th.
OpenAI's inaugural hire in India is Pragya Misra, who will serve as the Public Policy and Partnerships Head. Misra's previous experience includes holding the position of public affairs head at Truecaller and leading the WhatsApp campaign against misinformation at Meta in 2018.
OpenAI's Expansion into India
Over the past year, the Microsoft-backed AI startup has been exploring opportunities in India. Recently, the Election Commission of India (ECI) engaged with OpenAI officials to discuss combating AI misuse during elections. CEO Sam Altman also visited India last year, advocating for a nationally-funded AI effort to enhance government services.
In light of the growing importance of AI regulation in India, the government launched the IndiaAI mission with an allocation of Rs. 10,000 crore to promote AI research and usage. Additionally, the IT ministry issued an advisory requiring 'undertested' AI models to obtain government approval before deployment in India.
