Google Removes Gemini From Google App for iOS Devices
Google removed its artificial intelligence (AI) assistant Gemini from the Google app for iOS devices, informing customers that they can now access the AI assistant by downloading the Gemini app from the App Store.
Transition to Gemini App
The company relayed this change to customers via email, a report by TechCrunch unveiled on Wednesday (Feb. 19). Users attempting to access Gemini through the Google app will now encounter a prompt stating, “Gemini now has its own app,” with links to the App Store for easy installation.
Competing with AI Chatbots
This shift aims to position Google in direct competition with ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and other consumer-facing AI chatbots. However, the move risks losing Gemini users by requiring them to download a separate app instead of integrating the feature within the Google app.
Gemini App Features
Google introduced the Gemini app for iPhone in November, offering users access to the Gemini Live voice assistant, premium image generator, and seamless integration with other Google services like YouTube and Gmail within single conversations.

Growing Trend of AI Tools
The launch of the Gemini iPhone app signifies a broader trend among tech companies to cater to mainstream users seeking AI tools for everyday tasks on their mobile devices. Companies are striving to convert casual users into paying subscribers through features like chatbots, photo editing, and writing assistance.
AI's Impact on User Engagement
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the role of AI in driving user engagement and growth during an October earnings call. According to Pichai, the satisfaction and user adoption of AI tools in search are steadily increasing as users adapt to new behavior patterns over time.
