Multiple media outlets have reported that OpenAI is about to announce an AI-powered search service, or an extension to ChatGPT, that will allow it to retrieve information from the web. The announcement is expected to be made the day before Google's annual conference, Google I/O 2024, on May 14, 2024.

While the specific announcement date is unknown, technology-focused business media The Information reported in February 2024 that OpenAI had begun developing search technology.
According to Bloomberg, the new search service is an extension for ChatGPT that will allow chatbots to search the Internet directly and cite sources in the output results, putting ChatGPT in direct competition with Google Search and AI search startup Perplexity. 
OpenAI previously offered a 'ChatGPT plugin' that allows real-world information to be incorporated into ChatGPT, and announced that development of the beta version would end in April 2024.
Other AI Technologies Announcement
At OpenAI's latest announcement, there is a possibility that other AI technologies besides the search function will be announced. For example, on May 9th, it was reported that a demo version of a new product that was scheduled to be shown internally on that day was postponed, and that a chatbot thought to be a successor to GPT-4 may be being secretly tested.
