Global Leaders Discuss AI and ChatGPT at G7 Summit
Global leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies are set to meet in Hiroshima next month for their annual meeting. One of the main topics of discussion will be Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI ChatGPT. The meeting aims to formulate international rules to regulate the use of AI-based systems like ChatGPT, which have raised concerns about their impact on society.
International Rules for AI-Based Systems
Recently, the rapid proliferation of AI-based tools has led to calls for regulating advanced systems like ChatGPT. Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the host of this year's G7 meeting, stated that “International rules need to be created'' during a meeting with regional newspaper executives. A draft communiqué has been sent to all G7 digital members on the matter, and the topic is also expected to be mentioned in the joint statement.
Several countries have already banned the use of ChatGPT on all platforms, with Italy being the most recent. EU lawmakers have urged world leaders to hold a summit to find ways to control the development of such systems, while US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has launched an effort to establish rules on AI to address national security and education concerns.
About ChatGPT
ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, is driven by a machine-learning model that simulates human-like responses. It is pre-trained with massive amounts of data to generate text and is considered a breakthrough technology in natural language processing. However, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on society.
Rules for Reliable and Safe AI
The Internal Affairs Minister of Japan Takeaki Matsumoto has urged world leaders to discuss rules for reliable AI that can be used safely. During a press conference after a Cabinet meeting, he spoke about the establishment of a framework to share rules on the management and operation of AI, as well as helping businesses compile international technological standards to that end.
The Digital and Tech Ministers’ Meeting
The digital and tech ministers’ meeting will be held in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, on April 29-30. The G7 will also draw up an action plan for constructing secure network infrastructure to support emerging and developing countries, promote collaboration to improve the connectivity of undersea cables, and address the blocking or limiting of internet access by some countries.
The G7 meeting is an opportunity for world leaders to address the challenges posed by AI-based systems like ChatGPT and formulate international rules that will ensure its safe and reliable use.
