Facing My Fear: My Experience with an MRI Scan

I Ran Away From an MRI Scan. I was terrified | by Sophia Chanu ...

My doctor had advised the MRI scan many weeks ago for this sudden, unexpected pain in my back. It occurs sometimes, but not always. I really needed to have an MRI scan. In my opinion, it might be related to my issues of acidity. But I needed the scan to be sure.

I had my crowns tested some days ago using real magnets. Oh, the sheer craziness of it. My dentist had assured me that the material of my teeth was not metal but alloy, and nothing would happen. I had read such scary stuff about MRI machines so I just had to take care! Today, I willed myself to face it. I roped in my husband to take me there.

As I was being led inside the chamber, I breathed deeply, willing myself to relax. My nerves have a way of acting up and giving me jitters, and often IBS when I am stressed — I had to control that. As the machine started up and slowly led me inside, at a certain point, a cold draft blew directly against my face, and I gasped for breath. This breathlessness was the reason I stopped learning to swim. I couldn’t hold my breath underwater. I had this phobia of breathlessness though I am not exactly asthmatic.
