Enhancing Indian Railways: 8 New Projects by CCEA

CCEA Approves Eight New Railway Projects at Rs 24,657 Crore

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), presided over by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has granted approval for eight new railway projects managed by the Ministry of Railways. These projects have a combined estimated cost of Rs 24,657 crore. The primary objective of these new railway lines is to enhance direct connectivity and improve the overall mobility of the Indian Railways network. This move is set to bring about greater efficiency and reliability in railway services across the country.

The development of these projects is in alignment with the vision of a "New India" as envisioned by the Prime Minister. By promoting self-reliance ("Atmanirbhar"), these projects are expected to drive comprehensive regional development, creating employment and self-employment opportunities in the affected regions.

Key Highlights of the Projects:

  • The eight projects will cover 14 districts in seven states, namely Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, and West Bengal.
  • These projects will expand the Indian Railways network by an additional 900 Km and involve the construction of 64 new stations.
  • Six aspirational districts—East Singhbhum, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada—along with approximately 510 villages and a population of around 4 million, will benefit from the enhanced connectivity.
  • The historic Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will be connected to the Indian Railway network, boosting tourism to the region.

Impact on Transportation and Environment:

The new railway routes will play a crucial role in the transportation of essential commodities such as agricultural products, fertilizers, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, and more. It is projected that these capacity enhancements will result in an additional 143 million tonnes of freight traffic annually.

Indian Railways is known for its eco-friendly and energy-efficient operations. By improving freight transportation, Indian Railways aims to contribute significantly to achieving the country's climate goals and reducing logistics costs. This move is expected to decrease oil imports by 322 million litres and lower CO2 emissions by 870,000 tonnes, which is equivalent to planting 35 million trees.
