The tech giant recently unveiled two groundbreaking AI models, Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER, which operate on Gemini 2.0, touted as Google's most advanced AI innovation to date.

Gemini Robotics marks a significant leap beyond traditional outputs like text and images. This model extends into executing physical actions like controlling robots through explicit commands.

Google announced its collaboration with Apptronik, a robotics developer based in Texas, to create the next generation of humanoid robots leveraging Gemini 2.0. Apptronik, known for its past collaborations with Nvidia and NASA, recently secured a $350 million funding round, with Google participating in the investment.

In demonstration videos, Apptronik robots equipped with the new AI models showcased their capabilities by performing tasks such as plugging in devices, packing lunch, and manipulating objects in response to voice commands.

According to Google, effective AI models for robotics must possess three key qualities: generality, interactivity, and dexterity. These models should be adaptable to diverse scenarios, respond promptly to instructions or environmental changes, and demonstrate manual dexterity akin to human hands and fingers.

Gemini Robotics-ER is specifically designed to serve as a foundational tool for roboticists to train their custom models. This resource is available to Apptronik and selected testers, including Agile Robots, Agility Robots, Boston Dynamics, and Enchanted Tools.

Industry Trends

Google is not the only tech player delving into AI for robotics. OpenAI recently invested in Physical Intelligence, a startup dedicated to integrating general-purpose AI into physical applications through large-scale AI models and algorithms.

Furthermore, Tesla has made strides in the humanoid robotics sector with its Optimus robot innovation. The convergence of AI and robotics is viewed as a strategic testing ground by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who aims to harness multimodal AI models to enable robots to adapt dynamically to their environments.
