Having worked since the pre-internet stage of the technology industry, I have watched my own behavior changes in working with the world of information.
Evolution of Technology
In 1994, we marveled as Microsoft Encarta presented a better digital experience than the physical Encyclopedia Britannica. More up-to-date, more interactive, a much richer experience.
In 1997, we moved over to Yahoo which quickly became the most popular web portal by combining email, news, finance, and search. It wasn't exactly a search engine, but a huge hierarchical web directory where you could drill down to information.
In 2002, we moved over to Google which became #1 in global search traffic and visited website. It is the "default" choice of web searching because of a minimalist design and a brilliant search algorithm based on page ranking. 81% of customers start the (considered) buying journey through a Google search.
In 2023, we started moving over to ChatGPT which removed the labor of searching and then digging through the Top 10 results for the answer.
And it isn't just Google that is declining in popularity. Many of the sites that are critical information sources that have been widely crowdsourced - like Wikipedia and Reddit, Inc. - are losing share to generative AI tools that just answer the question directly, provide as much context as you need, without any labor.
Integration of AI in Everyday Life
Generative AI is now integrating with our entire lives, both personal and professional. It is in our phones (Apple Intelligence or Google Gemini), in our cars (CarPlay or Android Auto), in our productivity software (Microsoft CoPilot or Salesforce Agentforce), in our personal devices (Alexa, Apple Watch, IoT), and in our smart TVs.
Prediction: ChatGPT will overtake Google (not including YouTube) as the world's most used search by 2030.
