On Friday, 29 November 2024, five major Canadian news media companies initiated a legal action against ChatGPT owner OpenAI. They have accused OpenAI of regularly breaching copyright and online terms of use. This legal move comes as the latest challenge for OpenAi, which counts Microsoft as its major backer.

Accusations Against OpenAI

In a joint statement, Torstar, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press, and CBC/Radio-Canada alleged that OpenAI was scraping significant amounts of content from media sources to aid in the development of its products without obtaining permission or compensating the content owners. The Canadian media companies emphasized the importance of journalism in the public interest and condemned OpenAI's use of their journalism for commercial gain as illegal.
