US Issues Stricter Travel Advisory for Bangladesh
The United States has reissued its travel advisory for Bangladesh, cautioning its citizens about civil unrest, crime, and terrorism in the country. The advisory, issued on Friday, urged travelers to reconsider their plans to visit Bangladesh, highlighting certain areas with an increased risk.
According to the advisory, the civil unrest and clashes in Bangladesh have decreased since the formation of the country's interim government in 2024. However, there are still occasional protests that could escalate into violent clashes. US citizens are advised to avoid all gatherings, including peaceful ones, as they may turn violent without warning.
One of the major concerns mentioned in the advisory is the risk of terrorist violence in Bangladesh. The US government's ability to provide emergency services to its citizens in Bangladesh, especially outside of Dhaka, is limited due to travel restrictions and other factors.
Areas to Avoid
The US advisory specifically identified the Chittagong Hill Tracts region as a 'Level 4: Do Not Travel' area. It warned against any travel to Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban Hill Tracts districts due to communal violence, crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and other security risks.
The Chittagong Hill Tracts area is known to have separatist organizations and political violence, which pose additional threats to visitors. Incidents of IED explosions and active shootings have also been reported in the region.
