Apple could use ChatGPT to power AI features in iOS 18
With Apple set to announce iOS 18 (and a whole lot more) at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10, it's rumored that the company is in talks with ChatGPT developer OpenAI to help with a major AI upgrade for the iPhone.
This comes from the usually reliable Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, who says discussions between Apple and OpenAI have been "renewed" and are now intensifying, according to unnamed people "familiar with the matter".
Possible Partnership with OpenAI
Last month, Bloomberg reported that Apple was speaking to Google about using the Gemini chatbot inside iOS 18. This indicates that Apple is actively seeking a partnership for its next major software upgrade. The latest report suggests that OpenAI might have emerged as the frontrunner in this race. Tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E, developed by OpenAI, could potentially be integrated into the iOS 18 update, expected to be rolled out around September.
Gurman notes that Apple has yet to make a final decision. The company may choose to collaborate with Google, OpenAI, or even both. However, it is confirmed that AI will be a key focus of iOS 18.
Focus on Artificial Intelligence
Apple has already indicated that iOS 18 will heavily emphasize artificial intelligence. The update is expected to include some form of local, device-based AI capabilities. Apple has showcased new large language models (LLMs) that are compact enough to be stored and operated from a smartphone.
While the exact features of iOS 18 remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that the update will incorporate AI-driven text and image generation, alongside significant enhancements to Siri. Rumors have also circulated about potential AI-powered functionalities such as playlist generation in Apple Music.
