Hackers broke into ChatGPT creator OpenAI, report claims
Cyberattackers were reported to have gained access to internal chats at OpenAI but did not breach the chatbot itself. According to a new report, the hackers were able to view internal discussions and potentially acquire information related to the design of the company's artificial intelligence products.
The incident, as reported by The New York Times, involved a hacker extracting details from conversations within an internal OpenAI forum where employees discussed the technologies being developed by the company. While the breach exposed internal chat logs, the attackers did not infiltrate the systems involved in building and storing OpenAI's products.
OpenAI, known for its generative AI chatbot ChatGPT released in late 2022, has been a prominent player in the recent surge of artificial intelligence advancements. The company refrained from disclosing the breach to law enforcement as they believed the attacker was an individual without ties to any foreign government, and no customer or partner data was compromised.

The global race in AI innovation has raised concerns about national security, leading to an escalation in cyber threats to AI vendors. Dr. Ilia Kolochenko, a cybersecurity expert and CEO of ImmuniWeb, cautioned that attacks on AI companies are expected to persist and escalate due to the critical role of AI technology.
Kolochenko highlighted the theft of valuable intellectual property, including technological research, language models, and commercial information, as primary objectives for cybercriminals targeting AI vendors. He emphasized the need for vigilance among corporate users of AI vendors to protect proprietary data and prevent unauthorized access that could lead to operational disruptions.
