I hate breakups – so I get ChatGPT to dump people for me | Metro ...
For 55-year-old James Hay, the thought of crafting a breakup message is… a lot. Some opt for cliches; others go for a quick text (or Post-It, in the case of SATC’s Jack Berger) to sever ties; and more still avoid it altogether and simply ghost their partners.
Turning to Technology
But while James was keen to give an explanation and not just disappear off the face of the earth, the words just weren’t coming to him. And so he turned to technology – more specifically, ChatGPT.
Using AI, he drafted what he calls ‘a Dear Janice letter’. It was basically an expanded "it’s not you, it's me", talking about how he’s not ready to commit, not mentally in the right place, and doesn’t want to waste anyone's time while figuring things out.
The AI Breakup Letter
The digital firm owner, who is single and actively dating, found the breakup letter crafted by ChatGPT to be 'beautifully crafted' and surprisingly well received by the recipient. It allowed him to let the person down easily without the pressure of doing it himself.
Relationship coach Gemma Nice explains that while some people have used AI to breakup, it can be seen as a 'cop out' as it lacks the personal touch of a face-to-face breakup conversation.
AI in Dating Life
It’s not just in breakups that AI is being utilized. James uses ChatGPT in all areas of his dating life, from creating the perfect bio on dating apps to crafting engaging messages. He believes that these AI-generated responses are not cheesy because the technology knows how to avoid it.
However, Gemma warns that relying too much on AI in dating may lead to superficial relationships as it hinders one's true self from shining through.
Working Together
Gemma suggests that AI and people can work together to draft breakup messages that are thoughtful and kind, acting as a mediator to put feelings into words during a difficult time. Using AI as a template rather than a direct sender can help maintain authenticity in communication.
