Why ChatGPT is Not a Threat to Human Professionals

Lance Askildson, Guest Columnist: ChatGPT can never replace human professionals

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have led to hyperbolic predictions about the decline of human professions. However, AI platforms such as ChatGPT will never be able to replace human professionals such as writers, educators, and others.

Let's take a closer look at what ChatGPT is and how its abilities relate to the science of human learning and the art of writing. ChatGPT relies on a long-standing linguistic corpus technique which trains computers to analyze data sets of language. This technique pairs with modern technology and algorithms to mimic intelligent responses. However, ChatGPT is limited in its capabilities, lacking the ability to understand the meaning and context of language.

While ChatGPT can respond to creative inquiries and even some metaphorical prompts with seemingly meaningful replies, it lacks the ability to think, reason, and create truly unique and novel utterances. Human professionals such as journalists, novelists, and academics possess the ability to create freely and express new words, concepts, and perspectives. This is what sets us apart and allows us to grow and learn beyond our fundamental programming of instinct.

In addition to creativity, the art of writing involves interpretation and challenging what we hear or read. Journalists not only record what someone says, but they also interpret it and ask questions to understand the meaning behind it. Similarly, writing involves original thought, critical thinking, and interpretation. ChatGPT does not possess these abilities and cannot replace human professionals in this regard.

Human learning involves reasoning, interpretation, and creative expression. Students learn with the help of teachers who engage them in two-way dialogues that provide personalized feedback. ChatGPT cannot facilitate higher-order conceptual learning because it cannot engage in a two-way dialogue with learners or provide personalized feedback. It lacks agency and the capability to ask questions and understand a learner's needs.

While ChatGPT cannot replace human professionals, it remains a powerful and transformative tool for writers and educators to leverage in their professions. As these technologies evolve, it is important to ensure that they are employed in service to human growth, development, and understanding.

In conclusion, ChatGPT can never replace human professionals such as writers, educators, and others. It lacks the creativity, critical thinking, and interpretative abilities that are fundamental to these professions. However, as a tool, it can be leveraged to enhance the work of human professionals in these fields.
