The Rise of DeepSeek – The Grizzly Gazette
DeepSeek, yet another Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot app, has risen. The DeepSeek startup was founded in 2023 by a 40-year-old Chinese entrepreneur named Liang Wenfeng. DeepSeek’s latest product has been compared favorably to other AI chatbots like OpenAI and Meta. After DeepSeek’s latest AI model in January was released, it has skyrocketed in popularity globally, as the app was made to be completely free, and has been perceived to be “better” than the United States’ beloved AI chatbot, ChatGPT. According to Sean Michael Kerner from TechTarget, DeepSeek “hit the top of Apple’s App Store chart, outranking OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile app.” The rise of DeepSeek has sparked much debate over which chatbot technology is more efficient and cost-effective: ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Meta AI, Google Gemini, or some other AI chatbot.
DeepSeek has already been banned in other states and countries, such as Taiwan, Italy, and parts of the United States. The reason why so many areas have banned this app is due to unwanted data collection and distribution, similar to the issues that led to the banning of TikTok. This is also why the app is so controversial, as the United States is taking this as an assertion of dominance from China, essentially challenging the U.S. in terms of power. As of now, whether DeepSeek will be completely banned in the U.S. is uncertain, as security concerns regarding China stealing our information have gained more attention since the issue of banning TikTok.
Additionally, what makes DeepSeek so different from ChatGPT is that the program includes emotions and thinking instead of just giving plain responses. For instance, it lists out its brain process before providing the actual answer. In my opinion, this can give clearer and better explanations than ChatGPT, making it a more favorable app to consumers. Additionally, the success of this app has proposed that Chinese companies can improve and create artificial intelligence at its highest level.
DeepSeek is not using brand-new technology. The company uses known techniques, which means that the excitement and hype around DeepSeek could be exaggerated. Personally, we have downloaded both ChatGPT and DeepSeek to compare the two forms of chatbots. Both are very similar in the response and content that is sent, but again, DeepSeek includes their thought process as well. Some people actually may like the plain answers from ChatGPT as well and prefer direct and quick results rather than DeepSeek’s longer process before answering whatever question is asked.

What we found really amazing from the new DeepSeek AI chatbot was it can handle different languages outside of English. A multilingual AI platform can increase cultural spread and integration, and also help people learn new languages. I thought this was a great opportunity for me to learn more about the world without having to travel all the time. Only time will tell whether or not DeepSeek will make an even bigger impact in the U.S. especially, as professionals continue to weigh the tensions with the benefits of this new app. This, along with even more advancements, will all help to shape the future of AI.
