Sora: What to know about OpenAI's new AI video generator
A new artificial intelligence-driven video generator launched on Monday and due to high demand, it is temporarily unavailable to new users.
Launch of Sora by OpenAI
On Monday, OpenAI, parent company of software like ChatGPT and photo generator DALL-E, introduced Sora, an artificial intelligence video generator. Sora enables users to create "realistic videos" from text, photos, and other videos.
Temporary Unavailability
As of Tuesday morning, new Sora accounts could not be created due to the high volume established on Monday. A pop-up message on the Sora website informed users of the temporary suspension of account creation.
About Sora
Sora is a diffusion model that initiates video generation by evolving from a base video resembling static noise and gradually refining it by eliminating the noise through multiple steps, according to OpenAI. Utilizing the "recaptioning technique" similar to DALL-E, Sora can accurately interpret a user's textual instructions.
Sora can create videos from text instructions along with existing images and videos. It has the capability to enhance existing videos by filling in missing segments or extending the content seamlessly.
Key Features of Sora
OpenAI mentions that Sora is capable of generating videos in up to 1080p resolution across various aspect ratios including widescreen, vertical, and square. The videos can extend up to 20 seconds in duration.
To function effectively, artificial intelligence software like Sora requires training. OpenAI states that a combination of publicly available data from the internet, non-public proprietary data, and human feedback were used to train Sora.
Membership and Content Creation
Sora is exclusively accessible to ChatGPT Plus and Pro members. Membership options include ChatGPT Plus priced at $20 per month and ChatGPT Pro priced at $200 per month. The use of Sora is restricted to individuals aged 18 and above.
Members can create up to 50 Sora-generated videos at 480p resolution each month or a reduced number of videos at 720p resolution monthly.
Safety Measures and Moderation
OpenAI acknowledges the risks associated with artificial intelligence technology and has implemented measures to mitigate these risks. Safety measures include age verification for users above 18, limitations on likeness and face uploads, and stringent moderation thresholds for prompts and uploads involving minors.
