OpenAI Launches Deep Research in ChatGPT: What is it and how it Works
OpenAI has recently introduced a groundbreaking feature in ChatGPT known as deep research. This new capability has been specifically designed to handle complex and multi-step online research tasks efficiently and effectively.
Deep research is the latest AI agent developed by OpenAI that operates autonomously to conduct extensive research based on a user's query. According to OpenAI, this advanced feature can accomplish in minutes what would typically take a human several hours. It is powered by an optimized version of OpenAI's o3 model, tailored for web browsing and data analysis.
Capabilities of Deep Research
Unlike traditional ChatGPT responses, deep research delves into vast amounts of data including text, images, and PDFs available on the internet. It is capable of adjusting its approach based on the information it uncovers, making it a valuable tool for individuals in various fields.
OpenAI highlights that deep research caters to finance, science, policy, and engineering professionals who require accurate and dependable information. However, it is also beneficial for everyday users who may need assistance with tasks such as product comparisons before making a purchase.
One of the standout features of deep research is its ability to uncover niche and non-obvious information that may be scattered across multiple sources. OpenAI emphasizes that each output from deep research is thoroughly documented with clear citations and a summary of its thought process, enhancing the ease of referencing and verifying the information.
Utilizing Deep Research in ChatGPT
Users can access deep research within ChatGPT by selecting it in the message composer. By entering a query, such as a competitive analysis on streaming platforms or a personalized report on the best commuter bike, the tool initiates its research process.
A sidebar will display the steps taken and sources utilized during the research, with the process typically ranging from 5 to 30 minutes. Following the completion of the research, the AI generates a detailed report. OpenAI has announced that future updates will incorporate embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytical outputs for improved clarity.
While acknowledging that deep research is not without flaws, OpenAI assures users that any errors, such as hallucinated facts or incorrect inferences, are less frequent compared to previous models.
Future Plans for Deep Research
As of now, deep research is exclusive to ChatGPT Pro users, with a monthly query limit of 100. However, OpenAI intends to extend this feature to Plus and Team users in the near future, followed by Enterprise customers. Additionally, a faster and more cost-effective version of deep research is currently in the pipeline.
