What Meta Is Doing with Its Ray-Bans
Meta AI is taking its Ray-Ban smart glasses to the next level by turning them into a surveillance machine for AI. The latest update to the privacy policy for these smart glasses allows Meta to collect more data for training its artificial intelligence models. This update, which was sent out to most owners via email on April 29, expands the capabilities of the device.
Always Listening, Always Seeing
Meta AI with camera use is constantly enabled on the glasses unless the user specifically turns off the 'Hey Meta' feature, which is the activation phrase for the company's AI assistant. This means that the assistant is always ready to respond to commands, but it also raises concerns about constant data collection even when the user is not actively engaged.
By keeping the 'Hey Meta' feature active, Meta can potentially utilize images captured by the built-in camera for training its AI models. While the camera is not always recording, any photos or videos taken by the user may be used by Meta if they are uploaded to Meta servers.

Voice Recording Changes
The recent update from Meta also removes the option for users to prevent their voice recordings from being stored on Meta's servers. Now, users will need to manually delete each recording if they wish to restrict Meta's access. According to Meta's voice privacy notice, voice transcripts and audio recordings are retained for up to one year to enhance Meta's products, while accidental voice interactions are kept for 90 days.
AI Feeding Frenzy
The driving force behind these changes is Meta's focus on gathering more data to improve its AI capabilities. The company recently introduced a live translation feature for the Ray-Ban smart glasses, as well as a standalone Meta AI app. This move solidifies Meta's commitment to AI development and underscores the need for extensive data collection.

The Future of Surveillance Devices
This trend towards increased data collection by devices with microphones and cameras is likely to continue. Companies are prioritizing data acquisition over user privacy, transforming everyday gadgets into potential surveillance tools. As AI technology advances, the demand for data will only grow, raising important questions about privacy and control.
