Elon Musk's Lawsuit Against OpenAI Sheds Light on Internal
The legal action taken by Elon Musk against OpenAI that has accused the company of deviating from its initial nonprofit goals has already been much-discussed. The litigation process resulted in the disclosure of private messages shared between Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and other individuals associated with OpenAI from its infancy. While the case is based on antitrust issues — a claim most people dismiss as far-fetched — the leaked emails provide an interesting perspective on the internal workings of OpenAI and Musk’s relationship with the company he helped to establish.
Arguably one of the most dramatic quotes can be provided by one of the company’s former key employees, Ilya Sutskever, who used to be the chief scientist at OpenAI: According to him, Musk wanted total control over AGI. Sutskever opined that Musk’s desire to become the CEO of the new company despite his distaste for the position meant he might eventually want full control of the organization, even though he said he did not crave such control. Sutskever also stressed that OpenAI existed to make the future of AGI beneficial and ensure that it did not devolve into an “AGI Dictatorship” a concept that Musk has referenced in the past aimed primarily at Google’s DeepMind...
