The Classroom Robot, by ChatGPT: Unpacking the Imaginary of the Automated Classroom
In this exploration, we delve into the sociotechnical imaginary of the automated classroom, brought to life through an AI-generated short fiction. By leveraging the cultural compression algorithm that underpins LLMs (Large Language Models), and the sociotechnical nature of contemporary imaginaries, we task ChatGPT with crafting a short tale centered around a robot situated in a classroom. This exercise not only reflects on the role of generative AIs in shaping future imaginaries but also pushes the boundaries of how AI can be utilized in educational and research contexts.

Examining the Classroom Setting
Within ChatGPT's fictional classroom, we encounter a discursive material space where a reductionist perspective on AI in Education (AIED) comes to life, manifesting in two contrasting yet interconnected attitudes: technosolutionism and the apprehension of automation. Employing poststructural textual analysis and critical discourse analysis as guiding frameworks, we unpack this reductionist view to reveal deeper underlying issues. These include the routinization of teachers’ roles, the facilitation of a personalized educational experience through digital nudging, the obsession with personalization, and the pressure to keep pace with the ever-accelerating rhythm of life.
Exploring Key Themes
This discussion touches on several pivotal aspects of the postdigital classroom and prevalent beliefs about the future of education. 'The Classroom Robot' is viewed as a portrayal of the trivialization of technological transformations in education and serves as a symbolic representation of our collective expectations, fears, and aspirations for the future of learning.
