Artificial intelligence newcomer DeepSeek has sent Silicon Valley into a frenzy, with its high performance and supposed low cost prompting calls for US developers to go faster.

Deep Research Tool Unveiled

OpenAI, known for ChatGPT, stated that its new tool "accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours". The tool, named "deep research", is designed to independently work on a given prompt, analyzing and synthesizing information from hundreds of online sources to create detailed reports.

In a livestreamed video announcement, OpenAI researchers demonstrated how the tool can utilize web search data to make recommendations, such as suggesting ski equipment for a snow holiday in Japan.

Partnership and Future Plans

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, is scheduled to meet Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Masayoshi Son, the head of SoftBank Group, in Tokyo. This meeting follows the Stargate drive initiated by US President Donald Trump to invest in AI infrastructure.

Altman expressed interest in developing new AI hardware in collaboration with Jony Ive, Apple's former chief design officer. However, he noted that it may take several years before a prototype is unveiled. OpenAI ChatGPT

Competition and Concerns

OpenAI highlighted the competitive landscape in AI reasoning technology, with DeepSeek's performance raising questions about reverse-engineering capabilities from leading US technology. There have been warnings about Chinese companies attempting to replicate advanced AI models, leading to increased cooperation with US authorities.

OpenAI's efforts to boost Japan's AI infrastructure are expected to include the establishment of AI data centers and related facilities. The company aims to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
