Gemini's new trick on Android saves you from guessing or Googling ...
Ever wonder what song's playing on the radio or in a cafe? Your Android with Gemini can now tell you.
Gemini's Evolution on Android
Google has been tuning up Gemini on Android, and now it can finally name that mystery song for you—a long-requested feature that makes it way more useful on the daily.
When Gemini first rolled out, it left out some fan-favorite features from Google Assistant, like figuring out what song was playing. Ask it back then, and it would just point you to another app.
According to 9to5Google, Gemini has picked up built-in song search recently, bringing a major enhancement to its capabilities for Android users. It now feels more like a fully-loaded assistant, addressing a previous gap with its predecessor.
How to Use Gemini's Song ID Feature
To try out Gemini’s new song ID skill, simply say, “What song is this?” This will trigger a full-screen mode prompting you to play, sing, or hum the tune. As Gemini listens, you'll see the familiar pulsing sphere in action, using Google’s advanced algorithms to find the closest match.
Gemini's music-matching capabilities work seamlessly across various sources, such as songs playing nearby, in your playlists, or even tunes you hum to it.
Comparison with Other Song ID Features
While Gemini can now identify songs on Android, it's not fully integrated into the Gemini experience just yet. When you ask it to name a tune, it redirects you to the Google app’s full-screen listening mode.
This process works, but it lacks the smoothness of features like Pixel’s built-in Now Playing, which excels in providing quick and seamless song ID results. Additionally, Pixel's feature works offline, giving it an edge in functionality.
One distinguishable aspect of Gemini’s song ID is that it displays results on a Google Search page instead of within the chat, unlike the streamlined experience offered by Google Assistant.
Future Outlook
Currently, Song Search is exclusively available in Gemini on Android. While Google has not officially confirmed its availability on iOS, a phased rollout is anticipated.
