The Truth about StubHub's Alleged Hidden Fees

StubHub Accused of 'Convoluted Junk Fee Scheme' in DC Lawsuit

A lawsuit accuses StubHub of tricking its customers into paying inflated prices. The lawsuit, filed by Washington, D.C., Attorney General Brian Schwalb, alleges that StubHub engages in deceptive practices by hiding mandatory fees from customers.

D.C. Attorney General Sues StubHub, Alleging Deceptive Pricing

According to the lawsuit, StubHub does not disclose information about the reasons behind these fees or how they are calculated. Attorney General Schwalb stated, “For years, StubHub has illegally deceived district consumers through its convoluted junk fee scheme.” The company allegedly advertises low prices, only to reveal significantly higher total costs at checkout, intentionally misleading customers to boost profits.

Deceptive Practices

The lawsuit claims that StubHub uses a countdown timer to pressure consumers into quick purchases out of fear of losing their tickets. The practice of drip pricing makes it difficult for customers to compare prices as the fees are only disclosed towards the end of the checkout process.

Since implementing the drip pricing model in 2015, StubHub has reportedly extracted an estimated $118 million in hidden fees from nearly 5 million tickets sold to district consumers.

Response from StubHub

When contacted for comment, a StubHub spokesperson defended the company's practices, stating, “We are disappointed that the D.C. attorney general is targeting StubHub when our user experience is consistent with the law and industry standards. We support legislative changes that promote consumer empowerment through transparent pricing across all platforms.”

Importance of Transparent Checkout Processes

The lawsuit emerges shortly after reports that StubHub has postponed its initial public offering (IPO) due to market uncertainties. The company's decision to delay its IPO reflects the challenges posed by the current market conditions.

Regardless of the outcome of the lawsuit, research indicates that consumers prioritize a smooth checkout experience when deciding where to shop. Half of all consumers consider the ease of a merchant's checkout process as a crucial factor.
