ChatGPT's Progress in Five Months - A Revolution in AI Technology
OpenAI's AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has seen significant improvement in just five months since its release. The chatbot is powered by GPT-3.5, a large language model, capable of responding to vast requests ranging from reporting information to writing essays, acing the bar exam, and scoring high marks on AP tests.
The New AI Behind ChatGPT - GPT-4
Only three months later, OpenAI released GPT-4, a completely new AI training model with significantly more data than its predecessor. Currently, those willing to pay $20 a month can access the AI, which has achieved impressive scores on exams such as the SAT and the Advanced Sommelier test. If ChatGPT were a student applying to college, it could have improved from the 70th percentile to the 89th just with one retake of the math section of the SAT.
Jim Joyce, an Upper School English teacher, noted that although GPT-4 has not yet got the nuance of perfect essay crafting, it is impressive to see how it performs. However, teachers are wondering how they can adapt to the technology. With GPT-4's arrival and its capability to complete assignments as fast as a student, it is challenging for teachers to detect AI writing.
The implications of AI technology for educators include rethinking what they value and assess and adapting to new technology. Google has also released its own AI model, Bard, but attention has not been as much as ChatGPT. Google has teased AI products that provide tailored writing help in Google Docs and Gmail. Additionally, OpenAI is creating plugins for ChatGPT that can give the AI new abilities, such as searching the web for up-to-date information or connecting with other platforms like Wolfram Alpha, a mathematical computing tool.
Will AI Reach a Plateau?
No one knows whether large language models like ChatGPT will reach a plateau or not. Many people use ChatGPT for purposes that do not require attention to the technical details that could be improved. However, if its writing skills are used to measure how well the AI performs overall at replicating human intelligence, it definitely has room to grow. It is uncertain whether in practice, there will be a distinction between human creativity and AI creativity.
AI has the potential to change many aspects of the world for the better, including accessibility, and it is up to us to make sure it benefits humanity instead of replacing it. Revolutionizing technology comes with responsibility, and we need to ensure that powerful AI systems are developed only when we have confidence that their effects will be positive and their risks manageable.
