ChatGPT: The New Crypto as Stated by Meta
ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, has gained a lot of popularity and hackers have taken notice of it. Meta recently released a security report stating that threat actors have created software claiming to offer ChatGPT-based tools via browser extensions and app stores. These programs contain malware that can give hackers access to people's devices.
Meta's chief information security officer, Guy Rosen, stated that malware operators are quick to latch on to hot-button issues and popular topics to get people's attention. The rise of ChatGPT has created a new wave of malware campaigns exploiting the chatbot's popularity. Threat actors are rapidly evolving their tactics to evade detection and enable persistence by spreading across multiple platforms to protect against enforcement by any one service.
Crypto scams were fueled by interest in digital currency, and now the generative AI space is rapidly evolving, leading to the rise of ChatGPT as the new crypto according to Meta. Cybernews previously reported on how hackers might look to exploit the chatbot, and after conducting an experiment, the Cybernews research team discovered that the chatbot could provide hackers with step-by-step instructions on how to hack websites.
Meta has blocked more than 1,000 malicious web addresses claiming to be linked to ChatGPT since March 2023 alone. Rosen emphasized that the generative AI space is evolving fast, and we all need to be vigilant against bad actors who exploit the latest technologies.
In addition to ChatGPT-related threats, Meta shared its Q1 Adversarial Threat report, which details findings about nine adversarial networks that the company took action against for various security violations. Nearly all of them ran fictitious entities across the internet, including on Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, YouTube, Medium, TikTok, Blogspot, Reddit, WordPress, Freelancer, hacking forums, and their own websites. Furthermore, three cyber espionage operations in South Asia were disrupted.
Overall, the rise of ChatGPT as the new crypto should be taken seriously, and organizations and individuals should take steps to protect against malware campaigns exploiting the chatbot's popularity.
